In December 2006, The Register claimed iRiver could be busy developing a portable video player based on the iPod Nano.[14] However, it is not clear whether this product would be released for sale or if it was a product that would only be developed internally. A few months later, iRiver officially introduced its first portable video player, the iHP-500, which is capable of storing DVD and Flash video as well as MP4 video files. iRiver later announced a video player with an optional trackpad and a touch screen interface similar to the iPod touch.
The first model to feature MP3, WMA, WAV and M4A file support was the iHP-300, which was released in September 2003.[11] iRiver subsequently released a number of models featuring the new HWF-1000 firmware, including the iHP-500, iHP-600, iHP-600-HT and iHP-700. The iHP-700 now also supports DSD audio files.[12] In 2006, Apple announced that it would be replacing the iPod with the iPod touch, therefore allowing iRiver to continue to sell its products to Apple's existing customer base. iRiver has now stopped producing and selling MP3 players.[13]
In December 2007, iRiver made its global debut at the Consumer Electronics Show and began selling its first DVB-T tuner.[15] The player is compatible with all DVB-T and DVB-C, SD/MV/HD and HDTV broadcasts.
The first portable video recorder was the iSP-100, which was introduced in May 2008 and was initially only available in South Korea.[16] However, in December 2008, iRiver began selling the iHP-500 & iHP-600-HD in the United States[17] and Europe.[18] The iHP-500 & iHP-600-HD comes with a built-in DVB-T tuner and can also record DVB-T, DVB-C and DVB-S broadcasts.
iRiver's new software is more user friendly, but still lacks in other areas. It does not support any third party development, and it does not support portable media devices without software such as a computer, iPod, or XBox. Although the new software supports the features of the previous program (which only supported to play music files in the Windows Explorer), it does not support features such as playing music from flash memory. 827ec27edc
